First of all, I gotta admit: namely because of two of the new characters, Stryker and Kabal, I like MK3 more than MK2. But let’s be frank here: if you’ve expected some major changes from the previous installment, go look somewhere else. Really, there’s about only two things in Mortal Kombat 3 that are different from MK2: the character roster (as The Beatles would put it: some have gone and some remain) and the fact that you can choose between one of the three campaigns, each presenting you with a different level of difficulty. So yes, even if you’re a total moron you can still play. But that’s about it. The rest is just slightly (and slightly is a huge overstatement here) upgraded—or better yet reworked—visuals. The fantasy-esque tone of MK2 is all gone in Mortal Kombat 3 and the whole game returns to more ‘down to Earth’ setting of actual kind-of-post-apocalyptic Earth. As to the character roster itself, it has somewhat grown up a little since MK2 (thirteen vs. fifteen characters in Mortal Kombat 3), with eight returning characters and seven completely new ones. Which I for once quite welcomed, because MK2 characters felt just too much like cheapy unlikeable copy-pastas, since several of them just basically used the same live-action footage, with the only visual difference between them being different weapons/fighting-style and different apparel coloring (and no, that really doesn’t count, if you’d ask me). — Mortal Kombat 3, however, got this at least a bit right: characters from MK2 were visually updated so that they each have their more-or-less own distinct personality, and the new ones use all completely new and unique sprites straight-away. Now, the original arcade controls setup should look something like this. Where high-punch corresponds to MAME button 1, block button 2, high-kick button 3, low-punch button 4, low-kick button 5 and run button 6. Why am I talking about all of this? Well, good luck with MAME’s retarded default mapping, and good luck figuring out which button does what! Conclusion? If you spent a lot of time with MK2 int the time it was still new, chances are you’re still going to prefer MK2 over MK3, but if you are new to the franchise, I think that Mortal Kombat 3 is more likely to be the proverbial winner here. EJB Menu
The EJB Menu is an alternate test menu that can be accessed through this button code in attract mode (identical to Mortal Kombat 3):
1P Block (×5), 2P Block (×10), 1P Block (×3), 2P Block, 1P Block (×2), 2P Block (×2), 1P Block (×3), 2P Block (×3)
1P Block (×5), 2P Block (×10), 1P Block (×3), 2P Block, 1P Block (×2), 2P Block (×2), 1P Block (×3), 2P Block (×3)
Put the following MAME code in umk3.xml to simplify the code to 2P Block (×3):
- Diagnostics Tests: Identical to normal test menu.
- Coin Bookkeeping: Identical to normal test menu.
- Game Audits: Acts like the normal test menu with an additional page with five new audits:
- Watchdogs
- Sec Chip Failure
- MK Locks
- System Lock Ups
- Illegal Opcodes
- Volume Adjust: Identical to normal test menu.
- Credits: Displays the ULTIMATE game credits.
- Enter Initials: Jumps to the high score initials screen. The number of wins seems to be random, but it increases every time.
- Penacho/Miller Game: Jumps to that Galaga-type minigame.
- Enable Hiddens: Unlocks Mileena, Ermac, and Classic Sub-Zero.
- Disable Hiddens: Like in the normal test menu, this locks the three hidden characters back up.
- Fatality Demonstration: Plays the long 'Supreme Demonstration' of Fatalities, Animalities, Babalities, and Friendshipalities.
- Error Report Test: Exits the menu. This probably worked on test units, but it doesn't appear to do anything in the final game.
Noob Saibot
Through cheat codes it's possible to control Noob Saibot. He seems to be half complete in this game: he can be controlled by the player without the game crashing (unlike in Mortal Kombat 3) and even has his own combos, although the button inputs are all identical to Kano's. However, he doesn't have his own special moves, fatalities, or ending text (he uses Human Smoke's). While controlling Noob Saibot, all fights will be set in Noob's Dorfen.
Noob Saibot is playable in the Wave Net version of Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, as well as the various home versions of the game.
Red Herrings
Yep, more red herrings! All text is found in chip um312u.bin, interleaved.
